[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]This is a page to view the scatter plot geomaps of all aircraft sightings (typically over 120,000 per day) across the mid-peninsula area of San Francisco, covering the week of Monday, 12/10/2017 through Saturday, 12/16/2017. Scatter plot geomaps simply have markers placed for each sighting during a day at the GPS coordinates of the sighting. In these plots, the colors of markers distinguish various altitude levels: purple for altitudes < 2000 ft; red for altitudes between 2000 and 4000 ft; green for altitudes between 4000 and 6000 ft; and blue for altitudes above 6000 ft. The slideshow is organized such that the scatter plots for each day are presented in sequence. Some of the things to notice in the scatter plots are: (a) the main approach and departure routes are shown clearly as narrowly clustered lines, (b) each airport has its own patterns, some of which are consistent day to day while other parts of the flow pattern consist of fairly random movements, and (c) there is a sizable component of the flight patterns that consists almost entirely of diffusely scattered sighting points. These scatter plots make it less obvious what impact more dispersed parts of the flight paths have on ground noise (other than by the altitude color code), and one should not jump to conclusions that high noise levels occur only under the tightly clustered routes.
